In May 2000, we completed construction services for the HVAC, plumbing, and specialty systems in the new Center for Clinical Sciences Research at Stanford University’s School of Medicine. Our work for the project included preconstruction and design assistance in addition to construction services.
The 222,000-square foot CCSR is the largest building ever built on campus. It consists of two towers, each housing three floors of laboratories and office space and a fourth floor of offices and meeting rooms. Twelve roof-mounted air handlers condition the majority of the facility with two smaller units handling specialty areas. There are also two exhaust systems: a general exhaust system, and a special PVC-coated fume exhaust system.
The facility includes a separate laboratory waste system consisting of polypropylene and Duriron pipe, as well as the standard cast iron sanitary and storm systems. Each laboratory is served by industrial hot and cold water, domestic hot and cold water, laboratory gas, carbon dioxide, air and vacuum, and deionized water. We also installed medium and high pressure steam systems for the facility, both of which required 100 percent X-ray quality welds.
The mechanical work required approximately 100,000 labor hours. We are pleased to have played a part in the continuation of cutting-edge research and instruction at Stanford University’s School of Medicine.
