1.5 MGY Pilot Cellulose Plant

Midwest Mechanical constructed a small 1.5 MGY pilot plant to extract cellulose from wood pulp and ponderosa pine gathered from the surrounding Black Hills forests to produce ethanol. This is a process that is currently being pioneered by a few people around the world, but has not yet been proven an efficient enough process to enter the main stream ethanol marketplace.

Midwest provided pipe fitting and millwright services installing the various equipment, conveying and piping systems at the pilot plant in Wyoming. Ethanol production in this demonstration plant began Jan. 5, 2008. The plant is a culmination of efforts between KL Process Design, the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, the Wyoming Business Council and the Wyoming Department of Forestry. Because the plant is small, it will have the ability to easily go on-line and off-line testing different feed stocks in its research laboratory.
