Underground Steam Transmission Line to Cargill

Midwest connected an 18” underground steam line to the existing 185-psi superheated steam main in Trigen's existing downtown 100+ year old plant, routing the steam line through the plant, then out and underground to it’s destination at the downtown Cargill processing plant over 1-1/2 miles to the east. This project was constructed using Design/Build as there were many unknown factors in the underground work in this very old industrial area of Kansas City, Missouri. During the process, we uncovered many of the Kansas City's original underground utility lines that were so old they were not documented.

Additional obstacles along the 8,000 lineal feet of piping included running the 32” pre-insulated steam lines under nearly 100% existing city streets, three operating railroad crossings consisting of multiple tracks at each crossing, and under a Sprint fiber optic switching station. The 3 rail crossings were each jacked and bored, then cases with a 38” sleeve were installed on chair supports and piping was slid through the casings. The lack of city sewers along nearly 3,000 feet of the route, made condensate removal from the steam very challenging.
