Research Laboratory Facility

The 5-story, 205,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art biomedical research facility is located on the University of Kansas Medical Center campus in Kansas City. The project included 80 separate laboratories, including a BSL Level 3 lab, a world-class scientific conference center, breakout spaces, research offices and lab suites. Areas of research planned for the building include Pharmacology, Toxicology, Reproductive Biology, Neurosciences, and Proteomics (an emerging field of science which examines the structure of proteins and how they can be used to treat diseases).

Midwest erected an on-site fabrication shop to pre-fabricate, toilet batteries and laboratory set ups and numerous sections of piping. Pre-fabrication saved both time and money by having repetitious fittings ready to install.

Additional work at the KU Med Center Campus included the removal of an old chiller and the addition of 3 new ones to the Boiler House which is 2 buildings to the south and across a busy street very near the Emergency Room entrance. Steam and Chilled Water is transported through 2 buildings, tunnels and over a bridge to the new laboratory/research structure across the street from the main campus.

This project won an Outstanding Mechanical Installation (OMI) award for HVAC from the Kansas City Chapter of the Mechanical Contractors Association (MCA).
