Building M Central Utility Plant Expansion

Midwest installed two 300-hp high pressure steam type boilers which use either #2 fuel oil or natural gas for combustion, along with stack economizers. We installed a larger deaerator skid with feed water pumps and a condensate surge tank skid with condensate transfer pumps.

The cooling portion of the plant included a 2,000-ton chiller and associated 75-hp and 300-hp chilled water pumps and piping. The condenser water system for the chiller consisted of a 250-hp pump, a two-cell cooling tower mounted on the roof of the plant, and a 30,000-gallon condenser water sump tank and interconnecting piping.

The building, constructed in a hill within 10’ of an active roadway, required beam and lagging shoring. The shoring of the embankment on two sides of the excavation was as high as 30’. Twelve 48” round caissons were each drilled and poured from the bottom of the excavation to 45’ until bedrock was hit. Grade beams and lower level walls were then cast in place and backfilled. The upper level 2-story steel structure was erected on the concrete walls and both lower and upper floor slabs and the roof were then poured. The exterior walls for the upper level are insulated precast tees which are welded to the steel frame.

The project received the Mechanical Contractors Association’s Outstanding Mechanical Installation (OMI) award for its class as a reflection of the quality pipe fitting work done on the project.
